POKOTABI / Miki Sushi
三喜鮨
Located in a quiet residential corner of Yanaka, Tokyo, Miki Sushi serves nigiri such as kamatoro and anago, varied thin rolls, and cooked dishes like simmered sea bream head in an unhurried neighborhood setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Watching sushi shaped briskly across the counter is one of the classic pleasures of a neighborhood sushi bar. At Miki Sushi, set in a tranquil quarter of Yanaka 3-chome, diners can settle in without ceremony for carefully prepared seafood, from rich, sweet-marbled kamatoro (tuna collar) to fluffy anago. Ordering an assortment or an omakase progression allows for a satisfying flow of the day's seasonal offerings, bringing together lean red flesh, white fish, and silver-skinned varieties.
The appeal extends well beyond nigiri into a wide roster of rolls and single dishes. Thin hosomaki include the pleasingly textured torotaku (minced tuna with pickled radish) and classic negitoro, as well as spirited accents like spicy green chili or fresh wasabi rolls, working just as well to close a meal as they do beside drinks. Small plates such as fragrant anago shirayaki (plain grilled conger eel), simmered sea bream head, and pufferfish skin with ponzu provide ideal companions for lingering over sake, beer, or tea-infused shochu.
The compact interior comprises a few counter stools and raised tatami seating, warmed by the friendly, down-to-earth presence of the husband-and-wife owners. Thoughtful touches include menus with English glosses, making the space just as comfortable for solo dinners as for quiet conversation in small groups. Operating for dinner only from 17:30 to 22:00 (closed Wednesdays), seating is limited, so reserving ahead is well advised.
